3×3 cube notation

All six diagrams use the same viewpoint: front facing you, upper face above, right face to your right. Yellow stickers mark the moving layer; arrows show its direction.

R — right face
Looking directly at the right face, turn it clockwise: the right column of the front face moves up.
L — left face
Looking directly at the left face, turn it clockwise: the left column of the front face moves down.
U — upper face
Looking down from above, turn clockwise: the front row of the upper face moves left.
D — lower face
Looking up from below, turn clockwise: the bottom row of the front face moves right.
F — front face
The front face turns clockwise, carrying the front row of the upper face and the front column of the right face with it.
B — back face
The back face is hidden. Turn clockwise as viewed from behind: the back row of the upper face moves left.
Modifiers — turn angles

Turn 90° clockwise while looking directly at that face.

Read as “R prime”: turn 90° counterclockwise.

The four steps of CFOP

Each diagram shows the cube after completing that step. Colored stickers mark the solved parts.

Cross
Build a cross on the bottom: four edges match the bottom center and the four side centers.
Step 2
F2L
Solve the first two layers: pair each corner with its edge and insert them into the correct slot.
Step 3
OLL
Orient the last layer: make the entire upper face one color, without positioning the pieces yet.
Step 4
PLL
Permute the last layer: move the top-layer pieces so all four sides match. The cube is solved.
Step 1

Build the bottom cross

The only step without a fixed algorithm. Go slowly, look before turning, and always keep white on the bottom.

  1. 01Choose a bottom color — usually white — and hold its center facing down. The four side centers never change places; they are your color references throughout the solve.
  2. 02Find the four white edge pieces. Bring each to the top layer with its white sticker facing up, then turn U to align its other color with the matching side center.
  3. 03Turn that side face 180° (for example F2) to place the edge in the bottom cross. When bringing up the next edge, avoid disturbing the edges already solved; if you move one out, restore it before continuing.
  4. 04Check all four edges: white must face down and each side color must match its center. Aim for a correct cross first, then reduce the number of moves with practice.

Solve the first two layers — F2L

Each case is a corner–edge pair. Bring the pair to the top layer, identify the case, then execute the algorithm. Select an algorithm to break it down move by move.

Orient the last layer — OLL

Look from above and match both the yellow top stickers and the yellow bars on all four sides. Hold the front (F) toward you as shown, then choose an algorithm for that case. Beginners can start with 2-look OLL: make a yellow cross, then learn the seven cases in group 1.

The upper face is now one color. All that remains is to reposition the last-layer corners and edges. Identify the case by the color bars on the four sides: adjacent mismatched colors show where pieces need to move.
