Before you fold

Every diagram uses the same three marks. Learn them once and the rest of the page reads itself.

  • Dashed line

    Fold along here. The line disappears inside the model once folded.

  • Curved arrow

    Which way the paper travels. A dashed arrow means fold it behind.

  • Solid arrows

    Push here with your fingers while the layers move apart.

  • Colour and white

    White is the starting side of the sheet; colour shows on the folded fox.

Work on a hard, flat table and press each crease with your thumbnail. Small, sharp folds help the fox stand at the end.

Fold your fox

Step 1 of 10

  1. Step 1: Make the centre crease

    Make the centre crease

    Start with the white side facing up in a diamond position. Fold the paper in half vertically, then unfold it.

    You should seeA flat diamond with one vertical crease running from the top corner to the bottom corner.

  2. Step 2: Fold the paper in half

    Step 02

    Fold the paper in half

    Fold the paper in half horizontally, bringing the bottom corner up to meet the top corner.

    You should seeA diamond folded in half, with the bottom corner meeting the top corner.

  3. Step 3: Bring up the side corners

    Bring up the side corners

    Fold the left and right corners up to meet the top corner.

    You should seeA small coloured triangle with both side corners folded up to the top.

  4. Step 4: Turn the paper over

    Turn the model over so the coloured side faces you.

    You should seeThe coloured diamond facing up, with a centre crease running from top to bottom.

  5. Step 5: Fold it in half

    Fold the paper in half from left to right.

  6. Step 6: Rotate the model

    Rotate the paper about 45° clockwise.

    You should seeThe folded model turned so its long straight edge stands vertically.

  7. Step 7: Fold the first ear

    Fold the top flap's right edge to the left along the dashed line to form one of the fox's ears. There is no exact reference point, so position it wherever you like.

    You should seeA triangular flap folded left, leaving a tall point at the right for the first ear.

  8. Step 8: Lift the centre flap

    Lift the centre flap

    Lift the centre flap until it stands at about a 90° angle.

    You should seeThe centre flap raised upright, ready to open into the fox's face.

  9. Step 9: Squash the centre flap

    Squash the centre flap

    Open the layers of the centre flap, then squash-fold them down. Align the corner with the centre crease.

    You should seeThe layers flattened into a pointed head, with the flap aligned to the centre crease.

  10. Step 10: Shape the tail

    Shape the tail

    Fold the left corner inward along the dotted lines to shape the fox's tail. Align the two bottom edges so your fox can stand on its own.

    You should seeA standing fox with pointed ears, a folded tail and two aligned bottom edges.

Set the fox on a flat surface and adjust the tail until it balances on its own.

If it will not stand
Align the two bottom edges again and flatten the tail fold.
If a flap tears
Open the centre flap slowly at step 9 and use your fingernail instead of force.
If the ears look uneven
Move the first ear fold slightly until both pointed ears balance visually.
